A female's view on wrestling

It's been sometime since I sat down and offered my thoughts and opinions on the goings on in the World Wrestling Federation . I used to write for an Aussie wrestling website , but since it closed down I have been somewhat ' lost '. Thanks to Iya and her kind offer to do a wrestling column for her new site ' Nightdwellers ' , this could mark the dawning of a new era for us both . I live in Australia , where we are currently enjoying an abundance of wrestling programming and pay per views . The down side is that we pay a small fortune for WWF merchandise in the way of magazines, videos , tshirts and the like - which is no fault to the WWF itself ..it's just that we live so damn far away !! We are all awaiting for a tour Down Under ... something that is way over due! I have been a wrestling fan for about 4 years - I suppose it was the ' attitude ' era that got me hooked . I still like to hire the videos from 1996 onwards ... the antics of Degeneration X , Mankind matches , Stone Cold vs McMahon , Undertaker / Kane saga , etc is something that I feel contributed greatly to the popularity that the WWF is enjoying today. My favorite wrestlers??? Well , Mick Foley , Chyna , Jericho , Test , and of course - Kane and Undertaker.

After watching Royal Rumble 2001 , I think it's fair to call 2001 Kane's Year . His performance at RR was extremely impressive . Though it has taken a while for Kane to come out on his own, this should be his year to shine. It also seems that the past has been forgotten - the reunion of Undertaker and Kane , though it has happen time and time again, looks to be permanent . There is no longer the stare down at each other , keeping watch on each others movements , even the body language between the two looks relaxed . Another question that needs to be addressed is the where abouts of Paul Bearer . Like him or hate him, Paul Bearer played a significant role in the story of Kane / Taker , and there has been no mention from either of the two since he departed Kane's side . A farewell by the brothers to Paul Bearer could be one way to close the story , and allow Paul to return as a different character that he is rumoured to be doing . The hatchet has been buried , their blood IS thicker than water , time to move on to destruction and domination.

Chyna has come a long way from the silent bodyguard that she once was . The struggle to get to where she is has been a personal victory for her - I have yet to read her book ' If They only Knew ' . From what I understand , it's an indepth look her her controversial upbringing that has given her the determination to succeed . I was somewhat disappointed that they had to use a fake injury storyline excuse to enable her the freedom to do book signings and public appearances ...Foley's book was flogged any time he could get the chance while he was on Raw etc . There again , Chyna is the exception to the rule.

It's good to see that Test has a belt around his waist - since the storyline of Steph and their engagement, he has gone nowhere fast . I find it strange that he was a main character one minute , then a jobber the next . I wonder if there is some sort of pecking order that the Superstars follow - I mean , ok Test, we will give you an angle where you romance the bosses daughter , you get engaged , have the wedding on Raw only to get duped at the alter after Triple H marries Steph so she can get back at her Daddy ... talk about 15 minutes of fame . Now that he has the European title, maybe someone else will take the role of jobber for Test to get ' over '. Another way to look at it, what goes around, comes around.

I miss Mick Foley . The Commish has always showed the human side - not a character built on superhero status , just Mick being himself . The skits with Al Snow is another thing I have enjoyed . Since he has ' retired ' from the ring , the hardcore division is , well basically , a joke . To try to live up to , or out do , someone that is regarded as a hardcore legend , will only make the real deal look better . Crash Holly is one fine example !!!!

Does the Big Show look like he has lost 70 pounds??? Maybe it's because I have a big screen tv , but I' ll be damned if I can see any weight loss. It seems that Shawn Micheals will be returning as a mentor to younger talent that needs a push . With HBK and his ' stable ' , then the McMahon clan , the Island Boys , the 7 ft brothers , the Radicals , Acolytes , Hardy's, Edge and Christian etc, does this mean there is safety in numbers? One particular group that is missing is one of the darker side ... another place for PB to fill if he returns ?

I didn't like Jericho , or Y2J , when he first arrived in the WWF . His extreme cockiness reminds me of the wannabe's you find in a pub or nightclub . Well , being female I am allowed to change my opinion . If there was anyone who I would like to see walk out with the WWF Championship belt , Jericho is one of them . His charisma , witt , ego and wrestling skills all blend together to bring to life a character that is the real total package . And he has great taste in music !

I hate that feeling after I have eaten too much chocolate , or ate that extra piece of cake that I know I shouldn't have - that sickly feeling in your stomach ... I get the same feeling when the Rock , HHH , Steph or Austin's music starts playing . When you get the same thing fed to you week after week , you will grow tired of it . 20 minutes of wasted time every week ,doing the same promos , when it could be utilised giving other Superstars a chance to speak their mind , or even a few extra matches ! WWF has such a huge roster now , it's time to play fair and give all the wrestlers enough time in the ring to show case their talents . I get annoyed when people comment ' so and so is not main event material ' , well of course their not . They aren''t given the chance or opportunity , since others are hogging the spotlight!! .

Next week , I hope to get a copy of Chyna' s book ordered , so I can do a report once I have read it . I was going to get a Smackdown report done for this week , but due to a blackout in the first half of it , and our satellite cutting out , I will leave that till next week . Ideas for topics are welcome . Leave your post on the message board or email me at gypsy@fishinternet.com.au Take care .........Gypsy 02/02/01
